Bags to Cubic Yards Converter

Convert bag count to cubic yards, or cubic yards to bag count, for concrete mix, mulch, topsoil, sand and gravel. The per-bag yield used is always shown.

What this converter does

This tool converts between bag count and cubic yards for common bagged materials, using each product's typical per-bag cubic-foot yield (27 cu ft = 1 cubic yard).

How the math works

  • Cubic yards → bags: cubic yards × (27 ÷ yield per bag in cu ft), rounded up.
  • Bags → cubic yards: bags ÷ (27 ÷ yield per bag in cu ft).

Why not just use a generic converter?

A generic converter has no idea how much a bag of concrete mix or mulch actually yields — that's a product-specific fact, not a fixed unit ratio. This tool bakes in real published yields for six common bagged products so you get a real bag count or volume, not a guess.

Worked example

1 cubic yard of concrete using 60 lb bags: 27 cu ft ÷ 0.45 cu ft per bag = 60 bags exactly — the commonly cited "60 bags per yard" figure for 60 lb mix.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags of concrete are in a cubic yard?

60 bags of 60 lb mix, or 45 bags of 80 lb mix.

How many bags of mulch make a cubic yard?

About 13.5 bags of standard 2 cu ft bags — round up to 14 when buying.

Is it cheaper to buy soil or mulch in bags or bulk?

Bulk is usually cheaper per unit at larger quantities; bags avoid delivery minimums for small projects.

Why do bag yields differ between brands?

Weight and yield vary by manufacturer and moisture — check your specific bag's printed yield for large orders.

Limitations

Yields are typical published figures, not a live reading from your specific bag. This tool doesn't calculate how much material a project needs from its dimensions — for that, see BuildMaterialPlanner's concrete or mulch calculators.
