Roofing Squares to Square Feet Converter
Convert a roof's flat/plan footprint to roofing squares, or squares back to square feet — accounting for roof pitch, which most generic converters ignore entirely.
What this converter does
This tool converts between a roof's flat/plan footprint (what you'd measure from a site plan or by walking the footprint on the ground) and its actual sloped surface area in roofing squares — the unit shingles and roofing materials are sold by. It also estimates the shingle bundles a job needs.
How the math works
- Pitch multiplier: √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12, where rise is the pitch's rise per 12 in of run.
- Flat → actual area: flat/plan sq ft × pitch multiplier.
- Roofing squares: actual sloped sq ft ÷ 100.
- Shingle bundles: squares × 3 bundles/square × 1.10 waste allowance, rounded up.
Why not just use a generic area converter?
A generic converter treats square feet as square feet — it has no idea a roof's real surface area is larger than its footprint once you account for slope. Ignoring pitch is the single most common mistake in DIY roofing material estimates. This tool applies the actual pitch-triangle math and shows the multiplier it used.
Worked example
A house with a 1,000 sq ft flat footprint and a 6/12 roof pitch: multiplier = √(6² + 12²) ÷ 12 ≈ 1.118. Actual roof area ≈ 1,118 sq ft, or about 11.18 roofing squares — roughly 37 bundles of shingles with a 10% waste allowance.
Frequently asked questions
What is a roofing square?
100 sq ft of actual (sloped) roof surface — the standard unit roofers and shingle manufacturers price and measure by.
How do I convert square feet to roofing squares?
Take the actual sloped area and divide by 100. If you only have the flat footprint, multiply by a pitch multiplier first.
How does roof pitch affect square footage?
A steeper roof has more actual surface than its footprint suggests. A 6/12 pitch multiplies flat area by about 1.118; a 12/12 pitch by about 1.414.
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Standard shingles typically come 3 bundles to a square — confirm with your specific brand, since some heavier shingles differ.
How many roofing squares is a 2,000 sq ft roof?
If that's the actual sloped area, 20 squares. If it's the flat footprint, apply your pitch multiplier first.
Limitations
This tool estimates material quantities from a single pitch and a simplified footprint — it doesn't account for hips, valleys, dormers or complex roof geometry, which increase both actual area and waste beyond this estimate. Confirm final material counts with a roofer for anything beyond a simple gable or shed roof.
